University Smart Card

The University Smart Card stands out from the technological projects that Banco Santander is undertaking alongside universities. It makes use of the latest chip technology to adjust its functions to the specific needs of more than 200 university communities where it’s issued. It acts as an ID card, as well as offering other services: e-purses to store value for meal plans, vending, and laundry machines; library loan management; and regulation of access to restricted buildings and computer rooms, and debit functionality.

Holders can use it as an electronic purse or debit card and take advantage of discounts at a long list of shops. The electronic signature, special discounts on public transport in some cities, and management of universities’ athletic facilities are the most recent services to be included on the card. Banco Santander has issued more than 3.7 million university ID cards, developed together with more than 240 universities in 11 countries.
